In case of radio communication failure, which of the following statements is/are correct?

1. A VFR flight can fly in Instrument Meteorological Conditions, as an exception
2. A VFR flight may, under certain circumstances, enter the relevant control zones
3. A VFR flight shall squawk 7600

  • A
  • B
    1 and 3
  • C
    2 and 3
  • D

    1, 2 and 3

An aircraft equipped with an SSR transponder is expected to operate the transponder on Mode A Code 7600 to indicate that it has experienced air-ground communication failure.

If the failure occurs in VFR conditions, or if VFR conditions are encountered after the failure, each pilot must continue the flight under VFR and land as soon as practicable. It is not intended that the requirement to “land as soon as practicable” be construed to mean “as soon as possible.” Pilots retain the prerogative of exercising their best judgment and are not required to land at an unauthorized airport, at an airport unsuitable for the type of aircraft flown, or to land only minutes short of their intended destination.

Note: Controlled airports will specify a procedure for radio communication failure (for a VFR flight) and it might allow entering a CTR.
