The working principle of a capacitance-type fuel gauging system is based on the variation of the capacitor’s dielectric. The dielectric is the solution found between the two plates of the capacitor, so in our system, they are the fuel and the air. The plates of the capacitor can hold only a certain amount of electric charge. This amount depends on the distance between the two plates, the area of the plates and the insulating properties of the dielectric. As you can imagine, the area of the plates and the distance between is not going to change over time, they’re fixed. So, the only variable is going to be the dielectric. Therefore, the amount of fuel and air between the plates, which is continuously changing as fuel is consumed, controls the quantity indication.
